Day 14 - "Closer Than a Brother"

Proverbs 18:24; Hebrews 13:5-6

In our last devotion we talked about the extended family of God.
I had a big brother for real.
He was almost three years older and was always bigger than me.
We had our share of tough times growing up.
I'm sure it wasn't always convenient or
fun to have a younger tag-along with you.
Mostly, though, he watched out for me.

None of the older guys picked on me because I was Mark's brother.
I didn't have to mow until later
than most kids because he did it.
Later, I had him as a chauffeur!
I teased him as an adult that he was my bad example
not to follow, which kept me out of lots of trouble!

But I had a couple other big brothers on Smith Street
growing up - Curt Greene and Tom Hupp.
They were even older than Mark. They watched out for me, too.
We played catch, hotbox, and Indian Ball,
or we just hung out together.
I got to play ball with all the older boys
because of my three big brothers. Pretty nice deal.

However, we all can have a friend who sticks by us even better than that.
The Bible says those who trust Jesus are family -
God's adopted children - brothers of Jesus.
Our verse in Proverbs says He sticks closer to us than even a blood-brother.
Life couldn't get much better than having
the Son of God for a brother,
but it takes repentance, confession, and
trust to have Him dwell in you.
How about you - is Jesus your big brother?

Prayer: Dear Lord, we are so grateful for the relationship we have with You.
Help us to realize just how special that is.
Forgive us when we do not make
the most if it by spending time with You.
