Day 20 - "My Charge Account"

Isa. 53:4-5; John 19:30

My grandparents owned and operated Walters’ Grocery Store
on the corner of Smith and Ruehl Streets
in Forsyth from about 1930 to the late 1960s.
I grew up next door. It was pretty handy for groceries
and probably too handy for pop, candy, and ice cream!

As a child and young teenager, I helped out some
in the store. I would stamp prices on cans of food, stock shelves,
and occasionally check folks out at the cash register.
Some people had charge accounts and we had to write down
the items and prices instead of ringing them up on the cash register.

I got to have my own charge account!
I could get pop and candy and charge it.
I'd write down what I got on my running tab and
when I got paid from my newspaper route, I would come in and pay my tab.
Big stuff for a kid!

That's kind of like it is with our sin and Jesus.
We all sin and run up a sin debt against God and His holiness.
Only it's a debt we can never repay because we are the sinners.
The account just keeps getting bigger.
But God had a plan. Jesus came - God in the flesh.
He lived a perfect life so He could be
the perfect sacrifice for our sin debt.
He died for our sins and rose from the dead to prove He's
the Son of God with the power to forgive sins and save people.

When He cried out on the cross, “It is finished!”
it was the same term as ‘paid in full.’
All the sins I had charged up in my life were paid for by Him!
The same is true for you IF you have confessed,
repented, and put your trust in Jesus.
You have an account. We all do.
The question is, “Has yours been paid in full?”

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus for paying our sin debt!
Truly we are lost without You.
It is such a joy to know that You have done what it takes
for us to be free from the debt,
weight, and penalty of our transgressions.
