Day 22 - "Hang On!"

Romans 5:3-5; James 1:12; Isaiah 40:31

Riding in cars in the late 1950s
was quite a bit different than it is today.
No one wore seatbelts and there were no car seats for kids.
Most cars did not have air conditioning.
We rolled down the windows by a hand crank to let in air!
There were separate small windows in the front side windows called wings.
A metal bar separated them from the larger windows,
and you could angle the wings to force air inside.

I was too young to remember, but my dad said
he was driving home from Decatur,
and I was in the front seat with him.
I was maybe two years old.
The windows were down, and the wings were open for air.
I must have opened the car door and I fell out!
Somehow, I was able to grab the frame
between the wing and window and hang on,
but I was dangling outside the car!

Dad was afraid to hit the brakes for
fear it would slam me into the door,
and I would fall to the ground.
He had to slow down gradually.
He said he just kept yelling, “Hang on Terry! Hang on!”
I did. He slowed to a stop and pulled me back into safety.

Sometimes life throws us unexpected problems.
Sometimes it gets dangerous.
Sometimes we need help and can't seem to get any.
I think if you listen (and read your Bible)
you'll hear God yelling, “Hang on!
I'm coming! It'll be OK!”
Sure, He could just pull you to safety in an instant,
but He knows what's best for life and growth.
Keep the faith - keep growing in the faith - and never give up!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we need Your help.
We call out to You for all the things we
so desperately need to live holy lives in an unholy world.
It gets hard to do, but we want to hang on.
Help us stay true to Your word
and faithful in putting it into practice.
