2 Kings 6:1-6; Galatians 6:9
I don't know for sure what year it was,
but my mind has always said 1963.
I do know there was tons of snow, and it was bitter cold.
I was around nine years old and
had to deliver newspapers in those conditions.
You know I was bundled up and properly clad because
Mom would never have let me go outside otherwise!
Heavy coat, stocking cap with mask, gloves, boots, the works.
By the way I still have the stocking mask!
Anyway, I was doing exactly what I was supposed to do,
but by the time I got home,
one of my little fingers was frozen stiff!
We gradually thawed it out and it has been
fine ever since, but man it hurt as it thawed!
It reminds me of the men in our scripture today.
They, too were exactly where they were supposed to be,
doing what they were supposed to be doing.
Yet, one of them accidentally lost a borrowed ax head.
The prophet/teacher worked a miracle
by God's power and retrieved the axe head,
so it turned out okay.
The point I get is that sometimes we lose our power
or our drive, or things just don't go well,
even when we are doing exactly what God wants us to do.
It may even be said that obeying
God actually led to the problem.
We have other lessons to learn,
like patience, trust, and perseverance.
Learn that following God does not
mean everything in life will go smoothly.
Consider Jesus or the apostle Paul.
Neither had an easy path to victory - but they both did win.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord for including us
in the work of building Your kingdom!
We need Your wisdom and power.
Encourage us with successes and strength –
even miracles when we need them.
