Day 29
"Growing Old is NOT for Sissies!"

Ecclesiastes 12:1-14; Psalm 92:12-14

It is great fun to reminisce about The Good Ol’ Days.
Some really were good; some we have embellished and glamorized.
Growing up is one thing -
growing old is a different matter.

There is no doubt that attitude and
mental acuity make aging easier,
but sometimes the aches and pains,
failing body parts, loss of memory,
and financial woes are just too overpowering.

Senior citizens are often taken
advantage of or even abused.
Many just have difficulty dealing with
the loss of spouses and other loved ones.
And there are certainly the emotional strains that can
come with dealing with aging and doubts about usefulness.

All in all, “the golden years” aren't so golden after all.
Our scriptures refer to weakening vision,
fading beauty, trembling arms and hands,
waning strength, loss of natural teeth, lack of good sleep,
bodies wracked with pain, and fear of dying.

On the other hand, we still need to fear God and
keep His commands, for that is our duty.
Hold fast to Him, for He is our Rock, and He alone can
help us to continue to be fruitful for His kingdom,
even in our old age. Growing old is not for sissies,
but God gives the wisdom and strength to carry on
to those who follow Him. Never give up –
He will let you know when it’s time to come home.

Prayer: Father, we pray for the younger ones
that they will see the wisdom and value of living
for You while they have the health, strength,
and clear minds to learn and serve.

We pray for those who are older
who find these things fading away.
Help them to continue in their faith and
find ways to learn and serve despite
the inevitable changes going on in their lives.
