Day 5 - "I Want to Be Like..."

1 Corinthians 11:1; Ephesians 5:1-2 Philippians 2:1-8

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, westerns ruled the airwaves that fed our televidasions.
Sometimes ten or more of the top twenty shows were westerns!
The Western genre was then and still is today my favorite TV genre.
I watched then and still watch them all.
Back then, when I was playing instead of watching,
I was often playing cowboys.
At one time or another, I had the toy versions of Paladin’s belt-derringer,
the Lone Ranger’s “Fanner Fifty,”
the Rifleman's Winchester, Wanted Dead or Alive's sawed-off Winchester,
a Roy Rogers guitar, a fringed buckskin jacket,
a cowboy hat and assorted other pistols, holsters, and cap guns.
I had plastic toy replicas of Roy, Wyatt Earp, The Rifleman, and The Lone Ranger and Tonto.
I went Trick or Treating once in a Zorro costume!
I always wanted to be like one of those heroes.

Of course, in the summer I also pretended to be
one of the famous Yankees or Cubs baseball players, too!
Most of us used to want to be like someone else -
a movie star, a model, an athlete, our parents, or a big brother or sister -
somebody other than ourselves, bigger than ourselves, maybe bigger than life!

However, the Bible tells us to be like someone even bigger and better than that -
Jesus! It is God's plan that we become more and more like Jesus.
It is commanded. It makes sense.

The question is, “What are you doing to be conformed to His likeness?”
I spent lots of time and work, and some money, on trying to be a TV-type cowboy.
How much more effort should be spent on being like Jesus?!

Prayer: Father in heaven, forgive us for the many ways
we have fallen and drifted away from Your purpose for us.
Help us see that Your goal for us is to be more like Your Son, Jesus.
Help us to have the wisdom to cooperate
with Your work in transforming us to His image.
