Genesis 3:1-13; Hebrews 11:24
When I was a kid, I wanted to wear PF Flyer tennis shoes.
The commercial said I would run faster and jump higher!
I also wanted that toy I saw on television because it looked amazing!
If I got it, I just may have been disappointed when it did not live up to its reputation.
That's how advertising works. Build it up -
make it look too good to be true - overdo it - lie (did I say that?)!
I once bought a pair of special glasses through mail-order
that was supposed to help me see with X-ray vision!
After all, Superman could do it.
When I got them, they were a cardboard frame
with lenses that were like feathers.
Looking through those lenses created a shadow
around a person or object causing the focal point
to appear to be the inside of the shadowy figure!
Talk about disappointment! Hey, I was just a kid, okay?
What excuses do we have now for falling for such nonsense?
Get-rich-quick schemes or playing the lottery.
If you buy this product, you'll be younger, healthier, sexier,
smarter, better accepted, and on and on it goes.
People are just as gullible as that little boy of long ago - me.
The devil does the same thing with sin.
He dresses it up and makes it look good, taste good,
or appear to bring popularity or success.
Just look at the story of Adam and Eve. They bought into it.
And at some point, you have, too! So have I.
But we should be wiser now. False advertising ought to be easier to spot
now that we are adults and have read in the Bible
about the tactics of the devil and his crowd.
Don’t be fooled! It can have grave, even eternal consequences.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we need discernment to know when the devil and the world
offer us things that cannot be true and will ultimately harm us.
Help us recognize truth, speak truth, and follow the truth.
