Matthew 13:10-11
Ever had this conversation? “Why would you say that?”
“Well, if you really want to know the truth…”
And then you get the real scoop!
The point is someone gives a cryptic comment or
just a taste of what they would like you
to know in order to see your response.
If you respond wanting more, they tell you more.
If you don’t respond with an indication that
you’d like to know more, then they move on.
This is often how Jesus got His message
across to those who really wanted to hear
and know the truth that He had to share.
He told little stories that everyone
readily understood – stories about life
in first century Israel, or even before,
but certainly just plain, earthly stories.
He had deeper meanings, though,
and at first, most didn’t get them.
Many would go away without getting the truth
Jesus wanted them to know because they
just didn’t want the truth or perhaps
weren’t interested in putting forth the effort.
But the main band of disciples, and
gradually a few more, wanted to know more.
They would stay with Jesus, ask questions,
and then listen and learn.
That is how we should be.
Interested enough to learn and grow.
To dig deeper. To study, to listen
to teachers and preachers that we know
we can trust. Read these devotions!
The goal in life is to be more like Jesus.
To do so, we need to read and
understand His word, because
that is His main way of teaching us.
The goal of these devotions is for us
to learn more about how “kingdom of God”
people should think and act.
The intent then would be to put them into practice.
Prayer: Lord, teach us Your truths
and give us wisdom to understand.
Then give us the courage and stamina
to put what we learn into practice.
P.S. Check out 2 Timothy 4:3!
Many people will not endure sound teaching,
but will gather around teachers who will
tickle their ears with what they want to hear!
In 2 Tim. 3:7, Paul said some were always learning,
but never coming to a knowledge of the truth.
I think parables were a good way to weed out
those who really didn't care to hear the truth.
