Day 3
Parable of the Lamp

"This Little Light of Mine!"

Matthew 5:14-16

“Hide it under a bushel - No!
I'm gonna let it shine… let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine.”
We sang “This Little Light of Mine”
when we were kids and
taught it to each generation after.
Simple, but true words.

It amazes me how a simple, logical truth
often gets thrown out when it comes
to living out our Christian faith.
No one would put a light source
under a bushel basket and still
expect to see in the dark!
Yet we often fail to shine our
spiritual light, perhaps even
deliberately hide it, and then wonder
why people do not see the truth about Jesus.

Maybe you passed up a chance to speak up
when someone spoke ill of Jesus
or used God's name in vain.
Or perhaps you had an opportunity
to witness but kept silent instead.
Maybe God provided a blessing and you took
the credit instead of telling others about Him.
In each case, you would have hidden your light.

Jesus put His light into our lives
through salvation and both deserves
and expects that light to be shined!
Let Him shine through and God will get the glory.

Prayer: Father, help us to seize opportunities to do good works
so that you might shine forth from our
lives and receive the glory you deserve.

P.S. The old hymn, "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning"
was written after hearing the story of a shipwreck.
It speaks of God being the lighthouse, yet
there is still a need for the shore lights to burn.
They were out the night of the
shipwreck and lives were lost.
Even though the light from the lighthouse
was visible, the shoreline was not.
