Parable of the Wise and

"Be Doers of the Word"

Matthew 7:24-27

Nearly 25 years ago we moved
to Pana to start Celebration Church.
The house we moved into had no garage
or outdoor storage shed, so I bought
a small shed that had to be assembled.
One of the men from church brought some
treated 4x4 lumber for the foundation
and helped me assemble the shed.
I bought plywood for the floor and
put a couple 4x4s under that for support.
I knew when I did it that I
should have used more but didn't.

Eventually, the plywood sagged in-between
the 4x4s and held water from rain
that inevitably made its way inside the shed.
The floor rotted and had to be torn out.
I replaced it with rock and
have had no trouble since.
The shed itself was always on a
solid foundation, but the floor wasn't.
It sagged, rotted, and failed!
The problem was that I had not
properly supported the floor underneath.
How unwise of me!

Jesus said that to fail to build your
life on the principles of His word
was just as unwise. A shed floor is
fairly easy to replace. A life, even a
lifetime of living - not so much!
When your life crashes in because
of a poor foundation, it is a
much bigger tragedy than my shed floor!

Be smart. Take God's word
into your life, then live by it.
It's not enough to just know it,
you have to do it. I knew I
should have put more underneath the floor,
but I didn't do it!
A wise person doesn’t just learn
God’s word, he practices it!

Prayer: Teach us your word, O Lord. And help us
to know when we are not putting it into practice.
Then give us the wisdom and strength to do it right.

P.S. Here's another old hymn reference.
"On Christ the solid rock I stand,
all other ground is sinking sand
- all other ground is sinking sand!"
