Luke 12:16-21
There is nothing wrong with saving some
money or making plans for the future.
Our problems come when we are selfish with
our money or possessions or are arrogant enough
to presume that we can do whatever we want.
Selfishness and pride are good
indications that we are not
considering God's will for our lives.
When we don't consider God, we usually focus
on material, earthly things rather
than spiritual matters and then make
the wrong plans and do the wrong things.
None of us knows the future.
Making plans for what we would
like to see happen or even think
will happen is not wrong in and of itself.
The best way, of course, is to consult God and
live for His purposes, working His plans.
Before we make our plans, we
should make sure we are living according
to God's will for our lives.
The farmer did not even consider
spiritual things and when his
time to die came, he was not ready!
He had arrogantly thought he could
fulfill his own personal life goals and plans
and gave no thought to meeting God someday.
We should always put a relationship
with God first and consult with Him
in prayer and His word for guidance.
Prayer: Lord, please guide us with your
word and your spirit - even to
the point of overriding our selfishness.
Help us to want your will for our lives.
P.S. James 4:13-16 says, “Look here, you who say,
“Today or tomorrow we are going to a
certain town and will stay there a year.
We will do business there and make a profit.”
How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow?
Your life is like the morning fog
- it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.
What you ought to say is, “If the Lord
wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”
Otherwise you are boasting about your
own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.”
