Day 18 - "Shining for Jesus"

Philippians 2:12-15

When I am sleeping, I like it dark!
Well, unless I fall asleep watching TV!
I am better than I used to be, but there
were times when I didn’t like a digital
alarm clock or even the little power lights of
electronic devices shining in the bedroom!
But when I’m walking at night, I want light!
I need light! If I don’t have some light
to see my path, I will bump into
furniture or doors inside and trees or any
other object between me and my destination outside!

The Bible often describes sin as darkness
and the lost world as living in darkness.
Jesus is called the Light of the World and
He said we were to be lights to the world.
In His “Sermon on the Mount” He said
for us to let our lights shine so that
the Father would be glorified among men.

In this passage, Paul tells us that we are to shine
as lights in a crooked and perverse world.
We are to live blameless and innocent lives, above reproach.
That way we will prove we belong to God
and in bringing glory to Him,
others can see to come to Him.
The choice is theirs, but they do need
to see clearly that there is a choice.
Be that light that exposes darkness
and provides a clear path to Jesus!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us live in such a way
as to make the path to Jesus well lit and
attractive, so that those who live in darkness
will at least be able to see clearly that there is
a better path than the one they are walking on.

P.S. We used to live in the hills of Arkansas
where it got really dark at night.
I was out visiting people on behalf
of the church and got home late.
My wife had gone to bed. It was really dark,
and I couldn’t see clearly to find the front door.

I walked across the front porch and began to feel
my way along the wall to find the door.
Problem was, I didn’t start feeling until
I had already walked past the door!
A couple of steps later, I stepped off the end
of the two-foot high concrete porch
into the yard, scraping my hands
down the bedroom window screen as I fell!

I quickly yelled out to my wife
so she would not be afraid.
She wasn’t. She was awake and laughing
because she knew immediately what I had done -
because I can’t see well at night!
You’d think she would have left
the light on for me, wouldn’t you?
People need lights shining in their dark world!
